Professor Jeffrey Sachs on COVID-19: I’m pretty convinced it came out of US lab biotechnology

World-renowned economist and author Professor Jeffrey Sachs has said that he was “pretty convinced” Covid-19 did not come from nature but rather was an accidental release “out of US lab biotechnology.”

Professor Sach’s view lends further support for the need for an independent international invesigation into US bio labs run by the US military in numerous nations surrounding China and Russia. [** See previous China Environment Net articles linked below].

Professor Jeffrey Sachs, who for two years chaired the Covid-19 commission established by the prestigious medical journal The Lancet, has said he is convinced that the deadly virus did not come out of nature.

He was speaking at a conference hosted by the think tank GATE Center, in Spain, on 15 June 2022. While introducing this “provocative statement”, Sachs suggested that he formed this view after being “in the loop” chairing the Covid-19 commission for The Lancet. “So it’s a blunder, in my view, of biotech, not an accident of a natural spillover,” he reiterated.

In mid-May 2022, Professor Sachs and Professor Neil Harrison, in a paper published by scientific journal PNAS, called for an independent investigation of information held by U.S.-based institutions that could shed light on the origins of Covid. In particular, they criticised US government secrecy on the possible role of US biotechnology laboratories in creating the virus and the suppression of information held by the US National Institutes of Health.

“While blaming China exclusively for COVID-19’s apparent emergence in Wuhan, US authorities have suppressed inquiries into the role that US scientific research institutions may have played in creating the conditions for the pandemic. Yet if the coronavirus did indeed come from a lab, US culpability is almost certain.”

Sachs & Harrison

The authors suggest that if the virus did emerge from a laboratory, “it almost surely did so accidentally in the normal course of research” while conceeding that “it is of course also still possible that the virus had a natural origin.” But these are not the only alternatives.

Surely a genuinely independent investigation is needs also to consider whether given the large number of highly secretive US Defense Department biowarfare laboratories around the world played a far more sinister role?
