A major Chinese investment in Croatia – a wind farm with an installed capacity of 156 megawatts (MW) and estimated value of 230 million euro ($258 million) – has started operation in a trial mode, the Croatian government said in December 2021.

The Senj wind farm is the largest such facility in Croatia featuring 39 stand-alone wind turbines of 4 MW each spread on an area of 65 square kilometres, the government said in a press release.

China North Industries Corporation (Norinco), which is the majority shareholder in the Senj wind farm project, said earlier that the project will fill Croatia’s electricity gap, increase the share of green energy in Croatia’s electricity mix, and support local employment and tax generation.

With 29 wind turbines situated near the Adriatic town of Senj and a further 10 in the neigbouring municipality of Brinje, the wind farm is expected to generate 530 million kWh of electricity per year. The official start of operation is expected by the end of the year, and once commissioned, the wind farm will be operational for at least 23 years, according to the press release.

The Senj wind farm is the largest such facility in Croatia featuring 39 stand-alone wind turbines of 4 MW each spread on an area of 65 square kilometres.

“One of our main goals is to boost electricity production from renewable sources to 30% next year. I believe that we are going to achieve that goal thanks to such projects and by this big investment Norinco provided to Croatia, which makes it one of the largest investors in Croatia’s green energy,” Croatia’s prime minister Andrej Plenkovic said in the press release.

With its expected annual production of 0.5 TWh, the wind farm will contribute 3.5% of Croatia’s annual electricity output, Plenkovic added.
