World facing climate catastrophes – China hit by floods

Levels of rainfall not seen since the early 1960s.

Authorities across much of southern China have issued weather advisories for heavy rain and severe flooding.

Over 80 rivers have already seen waters exceed warning levels after days of heavy rains. 

Over 1.79 million people in central China’s Hunan Province have been affected by heavy rain and more than 2,700 houses have collapsed or been seriously damaged. Around 286,000 people have been evacuated in the province, according to the provincial flood control and drought relief headquarters.

In Fujian

• Torrential rain has caused landslides and blocked roadways throughout the province and more than 63,000 residents in Fujian have been evacuated

• Primary schools and kindergartens have suspended classes

• Firefighters formed a “human bridge” to help evacuate local residents.

• People ran for cover as heavy rainfall in the south and central China damages power lines and wreaks havoc in the streets. A landslide was triggered and buried a stone factory in the Fujian province.

Meanwhile, across the globe… 

• Temperatures are rising throughout the world, as heat waves bake major cities in Europe, Pakistan, India, and the U.S., putting many people’s lives in danger from the boiling conditions
• Temperatures reached nearly 104 degrees Fahrenheit in Southern Spain
• A broken water main left residents in Odessa, Texas without water as the temperatures hit 100 degrees Fahrenheit
• After historic flooding washed away roads and structures in Yellowstone National Park in the western United States, parts of the famous park will remain closed for the rest of the year
