Panama calls for more trade with China under BRI

Panamanian Foreign Minister Erika Mouynes expressed her will to strengthen the relationship between Panama and China during an interview with CGTN on Monday in Tunxi, east China’s Anhui Province.

In November 2017, Panama became the first Latin American country to endorse BRI, five months after switching diplomatic ties from Taiwan to China.

The Panama Canal gives the country a unique position in world trade. China is the second largest user of the Panama Canal, after the United States, and the biggest exporter to the Colón Free Trade Zone.

Panama’s per capita income ($15,000 in nominal terms and $25,000 in PPP terms) is among the highest in the Western Hemisphere.

The nation also has the biggest ethnic Chinese (largely Cantonese-speaking) community in Central America, estimated at 200,000.
