5G autopilot buses on trial in Zhengzhou, China

The Zhengzhou Bus Repair Plant was established in 1963 and today is China’s largest bus and coach manufacturer. The Yutong Bus company has a global market share of 15%, and 30% share of the China bus market. The business focuses on the production of all electric (NEV) and hybrid electric buses. It supplies these buses world wide, including Mexico, Kazakhstan, Denmark, Chile, Yutong buses has been shipped buses to over 130 countries countries, including France, UK, Australia, South Africa, Mexico, Cuba, Venezuela, Chile, Russia, Saudi Arabia and Taiwan province,

Manufacture is centred in Zhengzhou, is a major manufacturing epicentre of China with a network of vast industrial zones and tech parks, including the Zhengzhou High and New Technology Industries Development Zone, the Zhengzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone, and the Zhengzhou Airport Economic Zone (ZAEZ).

Zhengzhou is also an epicenter of automotive production in the mainland, with Yutong Bus, Shaolin Bus, Zhengzhou Nissan and Haima Motor all having a major presence.

Yutong Bus, operates out of the 1.12 million-square-metre Zhengzhou Yutong Industrial Park, where it produces 67,000 buses last year, and has the capacity to produce 340 each day.

China leads the world in the application of 5G technology, and in the application of the technology in the artificial intelligence of things (AIoT ) and robotic industries.

In June 2020 the Zhengzhou Yutong Bus Co. Ltd launched a 5G-powered Zhengzhou Autopilot Bus Line, a self-driving public transport system, and the intelligent buses have been operating on the roads of Henan.

Following the initial success, Zhengzhou City announced it would put 200 autonomous vehicles into operation in 2021 in a partnership between Yutong Group and smart travel firm WeRide.

The autopilot buses use a 5G network to communicate with the cloud control platform. They can also communicate with the traffic signals on their route. When it is nearing a crossroad, the bus connects to the corresponding light and slows down itself.

The cloud stores seven major functions that smooths the overall operation. It includes Health Safety Checking, Auto-Parking, and Auto-Charging. The buses can recognize the parking area and park itself without the help of any human. When the batteries run low, the buses can summon the charging mechanism and charge itself. The company is also working on an Intelligent Calling System. Users can call the function by pressing a button and a mini-bus will be available at the location. It is supposed to work like a taxi service.
