The balance of the global economy is changing — and the numbers are becoming impossible to ignore.
China is a leading advocate of development cooperation between itself and Global South nations through its Belt and Road Initiative, and between the BRICS+ bloc of developing economies.
For decades, the G7 stood at the centre of global economic power. But measured by purchasing power parity, the expanded BRICS bloc now accounts for roughly 40% of the world economy, compared with around 28% for the G7.
The attached video examines what the growth of the numbers for BRICS actually mean — and looks at the rise of China, India and Indonesia, the growing economic weight of the Global South, BRICS’ control of major energy and commodity resources, and the expanding role of its New Development Bank.
It also examines one of the most important developments happening quietly beneath the headlines: How BRICS countries are working on greater use of local currencies, cross-border payment integration and financial infrastructure that could gradually reduce their dependence on the traditional Western-led financial system.
But BRICS still faces major challenges. The G7 remains wealthier per person, stronger in nominal-dollar terms and deeply entrenched at the centre of global banking, investment and reserve-currency markets.
This is not simply a story about the BRICS’ “defeat” of the G7. It is about something much bigger: Economic power and financial power are no longer concentrated in the same part of the world. BRICS spent its first two decades becoming big. Now comes the harder question: Can it actually turn that size into lasting financial and geopolitical influence — and give substance to a truly multipolar world?
