Developing nations using Chinese solar panels to bypass fossil fuel era

China’s factories made solar panels 85% cheaper in a decade – and countries that never had reliable electricity are now leapfrogging fossil fuels.

The price reduction that Chinese manufacturing scale produced has already permanently lowered the bar for global energy access — a consequence that belongs to the world’s clean energy transition regardless of its origin.

When China began scaling solar manufacturing in the early 2010s, photovoltaic panels cost over $1 per watt. A decade of factory expansion, supply chain integration, and relentless process improvement at companies including Longi, Jinko, and Trina Solar drove that cost below $0.15 per watt by 2023 — an 85% reduction that has fundamentally changed the economics of electricity access in countries that never had reliable grid power.

In sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, and South Asia, the combination of abundant sunshine, falling panel costs, and the absence of existing fossil fuel grid infrastructure is creating conditions where solar-plus-storage microgrids make more economic sense than extending traditional electricity networks. Bangladesh, Vietnam, and Ethiopia have all deployed large-scale solar programs enabled by Chinese manufacturing economics.

The geopolitical dimension is significant. China’s solar manufacturing dominance has created a clean energy technology dependency that Western governments are attempting to reduce through domestic manufacturing incentives. But the price reduction that Chinese scale produced has already permanently lowered the bar for global energy access — a consequence that belongs to the world’s clean energy transition regardless of its origin.

China made solar affordable. The world is still calculating what that means.
