China continues to shift to greener energy mix: white paper

China’s Energy Transition, a White Paper that documents the country’s changing energy mix, was released on Thursday, 29 August, 2024.

Major shifts have taken place, according to the National Energy Administration. By the end of 2023, more than half of the increase in electricity consumption across China had come from new, clean energy sources. The proportion of clean energy consumption in total energy consumption had risen from around 15.5 percent to over 25 percent .

Compared to 2012, the cumulative decrease in energy consumption per unit of GDP has exceeded 26 percent. Zhang also pointed to where the country’s energy sector will go in the coming years, as the country aims to reach its carbon peak by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060.

The NEA also promised to maintain openness and cooperation to address the challenges of climate change. With international partners, it vowed to work to maintain the stability of global energy supply chains and industrial chains.
