China’s Hong Kong SAR: all new cars may be electric by 2030

All new cars in Hong Kong could be electric by as early as 2030 – five years ahead of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government’s target.

Transport contributed some 17 per cent of the Hong Kong SAR’s carbon dioxide emissions last year.

The SAR government is stepping up policy support to lift the take-up of emission-free vehicles, including subsidies for electric car purchases and private charging infrastructure according to the SAR’s Environment Protection Department. SAR policy support includes HK$2 billion in subsidies for the installation of 110,000 EV charging facilities on private housing estates.

In March 2021 the SAR government announded that petrol cars – including hybrids – will not be able to be registered after 2035. That target was said by the SAR to be “the most progressive in Asia”.

Electric Vehicles (EVs) accounted for 30 per cent of newly registered cars in October 2021, up from 21 per cent for the first ten months of 2021, 12 per cent last year and 6 per cent in 2019. The ratio is expected to rise to 50 per cent by 2025.
