ENERGY SANCTIONS AIM TO STARVE CUBA INTO SUBMISSION TO U.S. REGIME
The Cuban Embassy in Shanghai has confirmed the arrival of a first shipment of 60,000 tons of rice donated as humanitarian aid to Cuba by China, the largest rice producer in the world.
The cummulative effect of the Trump regime’s economic sanctions on Cuba has created a severe energy crisis which has caused, among other things, constant electricity blackouts that have affected thousands of families and multiple institutions.
The UN General Assembly has overwhelmingly and consistently voted for 35 years (since the first resolution in 1992) to end the embargo). The UN argues that the embargo violates international law. It has cost the country anywhere between $130–170 billion since its inception, and has restricted the Cuban people’s access to food and medicine.
It is estimated that up to 38 million people have died as a result of U.S. sanctions internationally over the past 50 years, with a significant number of these deaths occurring in the last 35 years. The impact is particularly severe on vulnerable populations, including children and the elderly, deprived of essential food and medicines.
The Chinese ambassador to Cuba, Hua Xin, again denounced the impact of the United States blockade against the Cuban people. And reaffirmed China’s support in the face of the current intensification of this policy.
In an official message the China added that “in the face of adversity, the solidarity of true friends prevails and demonstrates that “Cuba Is Not Alone.”
China has stated on several occasions that it will continue its “support and assistance” to Cuba in the face of repeated threats from the United States. And condemned Washington’s pressure, which “compromises regional peace and stability.”
