BRICS launches prototype for New Gold-Backed Digital Currency

In December 2025, the BRICS bloc introduced a prototype of a gold-backed currency known as the “Unit.” This new digital currency aims to reduce reliance on the US dollar for international trade among BRICS nations, which include Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, with newer members such as Indonesia, Egypt, Ethiopia, and others also involved.

This financial technology initiative by BRICS-members holds significant potential for accelerating China’s, Russia’s and the Global South’s future development experience.

The Unit-prototype has not yet been officially adopted by the BRICS bloc or its central banks, but is being driven by key member states seeking alternatives to the current dollar-dominated financial architecture.

The Unit currency consists of 40% physical gold and 60% a basket of national currencies from BRICS members (Brazilian real, Chinese yuan, Indian rupee, Russian ruble, and South African rand). This arrangement aims to stabilize the currency while also retaining significant gold reserves. The design is likely to strengthen gold’s position in global finance.

The Unit combines hard assets with national currencies to create a settlement instrument that avoids dependence on a single economy. While the Unit does not compete with domestic BRICS currencies, it does challenge the dominance of the dollar. That’s because any system that allows major economies to settle trade without using the US dollar reduces demand for it. Lower demand erodes the dollar’s purchasing power.

The Unit allows the 10-member BRICS alliance to conduct trade amongst themselves, while having a gold and a BRICS currency-backed payment basket to settle transactions.

The Financial Times recently published an analysis from the global head of foreign exchange (FX) research at Deutsche Bank warning that the global economy was “witnessing a simultaneous collapse in the price of all US assets including equities, the dollar versus alternative reserve FX and the bond market. We are entering unchartered territory in the global financial system.”

Fifty five countries are now using non-US dollar currencies to conduct international transactions. Given the size and strength of the BRICS economies, the Unit is emerging as the most viable option for breaking the US dollar’s chokehold on global trade and investment.

  • Initial Testing: A pilot program launched on October 31, 2025, issued 100 Units, each pegged to 1 gram of gold.
  • Blockchain Technology: The Unit operates on the Cardano blockchain, intended primarily for cross-border trade settlements between government entities, contrasting with consumer-focused cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin.

Goals and Implications

This initiative is part of a broader strategy by Global South countries to de-dollarize international trade, reducing dependency on the U.S. financial system. The following points outline its significance:

  • Avoids U.S. Banks: It allows BRICS nations to settle trade without using the dollar or U.S. banks, shielding them from potential sanctions and destabilizing financial influences.
  • Market Stability: The Unit is designed to keep transaction costs low and provide a more stable trading environment.
  • Political Coordination Required: While not yet official BRICS policy, it is closely monitored by central banks, particularly in the Global South. Scaling the project will depend largely on political trust and coordination among member nations.
