Sheinbaum Denounces Trump’s new sanctions on BRICS PARTNER Cuba
Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has thrown down a gauntlet in the face of the US’ Rubio and dranged oligarch Trump: Mexico has never submitted to US sanctions, nor will it allow the Cuban Revolution to be destroyed.
President Claudia Sheinbaum has confirmed Mexico will continue to provide energy and other aid to Cuba, emphasising the Mexican government’s strong opposition to the US economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed Cuba.
President Sheinbaum made the declaration after Trump signed a new “national security memorandum” that reinforces the restrictions as part of an extreme, renewed policy against Cuba.
The Trump regime also reiterated the US’ continued rejection of international calls for the end of the Cuban embargo. In particluar, the US has defied the United Nations Organization (UN); each year the General Assembly has voted overwhelming to reject the blockade, with the backing of the international community.
In this context, Sheinbaum reaffirmed that Mexico will maintain its opposition to the blockade and pointed out that this position has not varied throughout different administrations and that Mexico has been consistent in this position before international organizations and the international community. These moves coincide with Mexico’s recent participation as an offical observer in the BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro on July 6 and 7.
Many commentators see these moves by Mexico as breaking the mold of US dependence and as an further realignment with the emerging powers of the Global South. Such an “alliance” is not only economic: it is political, strategic, and deeply symbolic.
Is the BRICS bloc moving towards adding Mexico’s geoeconomic muscle, consolidating a front that seeks to redefine the world order? Even without Mexico formally joining BRICS, it is clear closer cooperation with Latin America’s second largest economy is a strategic move for the Global South.
