Miao Xiaojuan, host of the China Chat program on New China TV, talks with two American experts who visited Tibet – Shaun Rein (of China Market Research Group) and David Blair (of Centre for China and Globalization).

Together the two visitors share their firsthand experiences on the trip, delve deeper into Western views of the region, and aim to separate fact from fiction. What they have to say is refreshingly honest and free from the sort of ideologically motivated bias so prevalent in much the Western, and particularly US media oligarchies.

The interviewees analyze the basis of this bias and give examples of the overt, everyday active censorship of news and information on China.

China boosts Ecological Protection in Tibet

The sort of outright political censorship discussed in the China Chat video is regularly applied to biased Western reporting in relation to environmental protection in the Tibetan Autonomous Region.

For instance, when does the Western media mention the fact that since Tibet was liberated from abject poverty and slavery, the average life expectancy in the plateau region has doubled from 35.5 before 1959 to 70.6 years.

A brief update on improving Tibet’s environment follows.

Southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region spent 20.23 billion yuan (about 3.1 billion U.S. dollars) on ecological protection from 2016 to 2020. The amount more than doubled the spending for the previous five-year period.

The funds were mainly used in projects targeting afforestation, wetland protection and restoration, nature reserve construction, natural forest protection, sand control, as well as wildlife protection.

In 2020, the region’s forest coverage reached 12.31 percent, and the comprehensive vegetation coverage of natural grasslands grew to 47 percent, said a white paper released earlier this year.

A total of 12.72 billion yuan has been invested to implement a plan for protecting and improving the ecological safety barriers in Tibet since 2009.

The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is known as “the roof of the world.” Tibet is an important guarantor of China’s environmental security and the Chinese government attaches great importance to the region’s environmental protection.
