Main structure of world’s 2nd largest hydro-power station in China to start operating July 1, 2021

Baihetan Hydropower Station, the world’s second largest after the Three Gorges Dam, is expected to have its last reservoir completed on Monday in Southwest China.  The station, with a total installed capacity of 16 million kilowatts, is expected to generate more than 62 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, which would reduce carbon dioxide emission by about 51.6 million tons, according to experts.  The Baihetan station is located downstream of the Jinsha River, in the upper section of the Yangtze River, in Ningnan county of Southwest China’s Sichuan Province, and Qiaojia county in neighboring Yunnan Province.  The construction of the … Continue reading Main structure of world’s 2nd largest hydro-power station in China to start operating July 1, 2021

About China Environment News

Global environmental crisis is the product of centuries of Western exploitation of the land, natural resources and labour of the Global South. US and Western over consumption is still the leading force for environmental destruction of the global ecosystem. The West is responsible for at least three quarters of global cumulative carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Despite its size, China’s cumulative CO2 emissions are only 19% of world cumulative emissions. CO2 accumulates in the atmosphere and oceans.  Western industrialisation has been pumping out CO2 for 250 years, while China’s industrial take-off started a mere 40 years ago. In the global battle for ecological rationality and … Continue reading About China Environment News

Climate Change Facts: Comparing China with the West

The Western media’s focus on China as “the world’s worst polluter” is devious and dishonest. The purpose of this article is to present the facts. Western mainstream media created Greta Thunberg as a pop celebrity, and so when she recently criticized China (and by implication the entire Global South), it is not surprising that her comments provoked a response. Thunberg is reported to have declared that being a developing nation is “no excuse for ruining future and present living conditions.  We can’t solve the climate crisis unless China drastically changes course.” Whatever Thunberg’s actual intentions are, her out of context comments … Continue reading Climate Change Facts: Comparing China with the West

A Resource for Scientific Radicals – The Return of Nature: Socialism and Ecology

A review of John Bellamy Foster’s The Return of Nature: Socialism and Ecology By Dr Camilla Royle The Return of Nature is a genealogy of ecological thinking. The word ‘ecology’ was not in common usage until the twentieth century, leading many to consider ecological thinking a fairly recent development. However, in this impressive volume, Professor John Bellamy Foster convincingly identifies a materialist ecological sensibility within works dating back a century prior to ecology’s popularization. Starting with the funerals of Darwin and Marx in 1882 and 1883 respectively, the book traces how socialist thinkers in the nineteenth and early twentieth century were integral … Continue reading A Resource for Scientific Radicals – The Return of Nature: Socialism and Ecology

Climate-smart framework needed to counter food and energy insecurity for Global South.

Countries most affected by climate change bear the least responsibility. The 17 members of the Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate (MEF) generate around 80 percent of global greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions. That means they have the power to pull the brakes on the climate emergency. The 17 major economies participating in the MEF are: Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, the EU, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, the Russian Federation, South Africa, the UK and the US.  The countries most affected by climate change bear the least responsibility for the problem.
