China is fitting streetlights with small wind turbines, so the wind moving through the city helps power the lights themselves.
At first glance, this looks like an ordinary streetlight, but it does more than give light. In China, some designs carry small vertical wind turbines near the top of the pole. As air moves through streets and around buildings, the turbine spins and helps generate electricity. That power can support the light itself, often alongside the regular grid, batteries, or other renewable sources, and the city needs no extra land.
These small systems are not meant to replace large wind farms, since they produce much less electricity. But for street lighting, signs, sensors, and other low-power equipment, even a small local energy source can help. The pole is already there, the road is already there, and the wind is already moving through the area every day. It is a simple way to make an everyday streetlight a little smarter.
