China Dominates 90% of the Top 10 Global Research Institutions
On 10 June 2026 the internationally renowned scientific publisher Springer Nature released the Nature Index 2026 Research Leaders list. The latest data shows that China continues to firmly hold the top spot globally in high-quality research output, leading the world in multiple core indicators:
- China has reached the global number one spot in five core fields – physics, biological sciences, applied sciences, earth & environmental sciences, and chemistry. In chemistry, China demonstrated absolute global dominance.
- Chinese Academy of Sciences retains top global position overall and across most subject areas.
- Nine of the top ten academic institutions are Chinese universities, up from eight last year, with Zhejiang University rising to second place, with Harvard University the sole non-Chinese institution, in third place.
- China achieved double-digit growth in research output with 22.4% growth, the only country in the global top ten to do so .
The Nature Index tracks institutional contributions to research published across 177 high-quality peer reviewed journals spanning the natural, health, applied and social sciences.
The 2026 edition follows the most substantial methodological overhaul since the bibliometric database was launched in 2014. It features an expanded scope, incorporating for the first time 17 applied-sciences journals, one conference proceedings, and 15 social-sciences journals, broadening the disciplinary coverage of the rankings.
Nine of the global top ten universities were placed in China, up from eight previously. Harvard University – the top-ranked university since 2015 – slipped to third place overall.
The top 10 countries for global research are ranked as follows: China, the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, Japan, France, South Korea, India, Canada, and Italy.
China sits firmly at the top of the list with a growth momentum far ahead of the others.
