China will create a 220,000-square-meter car-free zone in the core area of the North Bund in Hongkou District. It will be the largest of its kind in downtown Shanghai. Once completed, the area is expected to become another iconic attraction along the Huangpu River waterfront.
A Shanghai Municipal People’s Government news conference on 18 May 2026 said that as part of the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-30), the city will expand green spaces along the Huangpu River, Suzhou Creek and coastal belt, and will launch a new round of park development across the city.
This is aimed at developing better quality urban life and continued improvement of public services in employment, housing, education, healthcare, elderly care, childcare, culture, and sports.
