China’s EV exports lead amid global energy crisis

China is exporting more electric vehicles than traditional fossil fuel cars for the first time, with exports of new energy vehicles rising significantly amid the global energy crisis. In April 2026, these vehicles accounted for 52.7% of all passenger cars sold overseas by China.

In April 2026, China exported approximately 406,000 new energy vehicles (NEVs), which include both pure electric and hybrid cars. These NEVs accounted for 52.7% of all passenger cars sold overseas by China, surpassing the exports of conventional internal combustion engine vehicles.

The surge in EV exports is attributed to rising global demand for alternative energy sources amid disruptions in traditional fuel supplies, particularly due to the conflict in the Middle East.

The total value of China’s clean technology exports, including EVs, solar cells, and lithium-ion batteries, reached $20.7 billion in April 2026.

The closure of the Strait of Hormuz and subsequent oil price surges have prompted consumers worldwide to seek alternatives to fossil fuels. Countries are increasingly focused on energy independence and resilience, further boosting the demand for electric vehicles.

China’s established manufacturing capabilities and competitive pricing position it well to continue leading in the global EV market. Analysts expect this trend of rising EV exports to persist as global energy dynamics evolve and countries look for sustainable energy solutions.
