The Taklamakan Desert — known as the “Sea of Death” — is one of the harshest landscapes on Earth. Yet, in a groundbreaking environmental effort, China has surrounded it with a massive 3,046-kilometre green belt, part of the world’s largest man-made forest. This decades-long project aims to stop desertification, protect millions of people, and secure vital infrastructure in Xinjiang.
This 12.5 minute video documentary explores how China’s Great Green Wall works: from drought-resistant shrubs and massive poplar forests, to solar-powered irrigation systems and engineering barriers that hold back shifting dunes. It also examines the challenges — water scarcity, plant survival rates, and ecological balance — that could determine the future of this bold experiment.
