China’s Ice Silk Road & Russia’s Arctic Route: bypassing U.S. maritime energy chokepoints?

Arctic Route reduces carbon emissions by 30%

Every major shipping route is under threat by the United States in 2026. Hormuz blockaded. Red Sea abandoned. Suez surrounded by war zones. Panama still rationing transits. And while the world scrambles for alternatives, China and Russia have been quietly building one along the top of the world, the Northern Sea Route across the Arctic.

When the Ice Silk Road is considered against the backdrop of the U.S. military attempts to aggressively close down China’s oil trade with Venezeula and Iran, it becomes clear why the Trump regime is so intent on seeking the military annexation of Greenland, a key arctic territory.

China–Europe Arctic container express route

On September 23, 2025 the cargo vessel Istanbul Bridge departed from China’s Beilun Port in Ningbo-Zhoushan, bound for the Port of Felixstowe in the United Kingdom—marking the official launch of the world’s first China–Europe Arctic container express route.

The cooperative use of Russia’s Arctic Routreduces carbon emissions by 30% compared with the Suez Canal, providing a greener, faster, and safer supply chain for countries and companies along the way.

In July 2017, during a state visit to Russia, China’s President Xi Jinping first proposed the vision of an Ice Silk Road. In 2018, China released its White Paper on Arctic Policy, formally outlining plans to jointly develop the Ice Silk Road with all parties.

In advancing Arctic route cooperation, China emphasized coordination with coastal states and stakeholders, respected the legitimate rights of Arctic nations in managing sea lanes, and advocated the peaceful use of these waters and international collaboration.

Today, the China–Europe Arctic Express not only seamlessly connects Chinese ports like Ningbo, Shanghai, and Qingdao with European hubs such as Felixstowe, Rotterdam, and Hamburg, but also consolidates cargo from Southeast Asia and South Korea for onward shipment—boosting overall trade volumes from Asia.
