China has unveiled the world’s largest smart DC transformer, marking a major breakthrough in how modern power grids integrate large-scale renewable energy. Developed by Changzhou Xidian Transformer Co., Ltd. under China XD Group, the 750-megavolt-ampere (MVA) device sets a global record for capacity in flexible direct current transmission.
Designed for grids dominated by wind and solar power, the transformer enables more stable and controllable long-distance electricity transmission. By converting alternating current into direct current, it allows power flows to be adjusted in real time, significantly improving grid resilience and efficiency—an increasingly critical capability as renewable energy expands worldwide.
The system incorporates advanced features such as rapid-response control for fluctuating renewable inputs, fiber-optic sensors for real-time temperature monitoring, and optimized magnetic field management to reduce energy loss. Extensive stress testing, including extreme switching conditions and lightning simulations, confirmed performance beyond design limits.
The transformer will be deployed in China’s west-to-east power transmission project, spanning over 2,300 kilometers and delivering more than 36 billion kilowatt-hours annually. As the first ultra-high-voltage flexible DC system combining long distance, high capacity, and precise control, it showcases China’s growing leadership in grid engineering.
This innovation points toward a future of smarter, more reliable global power networks capable of supporting renewable energy at scale.
