China’s green ammonia ships – potential to replace 91% of maritime fossil fuels

China has taken a significant step towards maritime decarbonization with the completion of the world’s first green ammonia ship bunkering operation. This groundbreaking achievement was executed at Dalian Port using renewable ammonia produced by Envision Energy’s plant in Chifeng.

The operation marks a considerable milestone in the maritime industry, demonstrating the feasibility of using green ammonia as a viable alternative fuel. This move is part of a broader strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition towards more sustainable energy solutions in maritime transport.

Green ammonia is emerging as a promising alternative to replace conventional marine fuels. Produced from renewable hydrogen and ammonia, it offers a cleaner, more sustainable energy source.

The use of green ammonia in maritime applications is particularly significant given the industry’s substantial contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions. By transitioning to ammonia, a vessel can significantly reduce its carbon footprint. The refueling of a tugboat at Dalian Port, which now replaces 91% of its fossil fuel consumption with ammonia, exemplifies this potential. This transition not only aligns with global decarbonization goals but also sets a precedent for other ports and shipping companies to follow.

China’s Envision Energy, a leader in renewable energy solutions, has played a pivotal role in this innovative project. The company’s 500 MW hydrogen plant in Chifeng, Inner Mongolia, is the cornerstone of this green ammonia initiative. This facility integrates solar, wind, and energy storage with proprietary production technologies to achieve dynamic coupling of power generation and green molecule production.

The Chifeng Project is fueled entirely by what is recognized as the largest independent renewable energy system in the world. It has received the ISCC Plus certification, making it the first project globally to be certified for green ammonia with a verified greenhouse gas footprint.

While the successful bunkering of green ammonia represents a major milestone, several challenges remain. The widespread adoption of green ammonia in the maritime industry will require significant investment in infrastructure and technology development. Additionally, regulatory frameworks must evolve to support and incentivize the use of sustainable fuels.
