Pakistan’s first-ever mass rapid urban transit train service built by China

The Orange Line Metro Train, built under the framework of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) in Pakistan’s east Lahore city, is Pakistan’s first-ever mass rapid urban transit train service. It has been making travel and life easier for local passengers. The system has handled 260 million passenger trips since its launch in 2020. The line, spanning 27 km with 26 stations, serves a daily average of 200,000 passenger trips.

The Orange Line project, jointly constructed by China Railway Group Corporation and China North Industries Corporation, was put into operation on Oct 25, 2020.

The metro was built under the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a 3,000 km Chinese infrastructure network project currently under construction in Pakistan. The CPEC involves energy, transport and industrial cooperation in the first phase, and expands to areas such as agriculture and livelihood in the second phase. CPEC is a flagship project of the Belt and Road Initiative, and provides a corridor linking the Gwadar Port in southwest Pakistan’s Balochistan province with Kashgar in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
