BRI: Joint Cambodia-China Hydropower Project

The Lower Sesan 2 Hydropower Plant, located in Cambodia’s Se San District in Stung Treng Province, is a China-Cambodia co-developed Belt and Road Initiative, spanning 6.5 kilometers across the Sesan River. The 400 MW hydropower project is the largest hydropower project in Cambodia. The project is a BRI joint-venture of China Huaneng Group and Royal Group of Cambodia and cost approximately USD $816 million to complete.

The hydro project, which commenced full power generation in December 2018, is equipped with eight turbines generating 2 billion kilowatt hours of clean energy annually, offsetting 600,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions. The hydropower station provides 20 percent of Cambodia’s electricity needs.

The dam with, a length of 6.5 kilometers, is one of the longest dams in Asia and the largest hydro project in Cambodia. The project covers an area of 9,854 ha of government concession land, and the dam has the capacity to reserve up to 2.72 billion m3 of water.

This landmark engineering marvel extends its legacy further, by empowering local engineers to lead hydropower innovation through cross-border knowledge exchange.
