Cuba has finished building 130 MW of solar capacity across five locations with Chinese funding, with each plant featuring 21.8 MW. It aims to connect another 1 GW of utility-scale solar to the national grid.
Official data on the total costs and financing mechanisms for the photovoltaic solar parks have not been released, although they involve agreements with the Chinese government.
The projects aim to strengthen the national electricity grid and reduce frequent power outages on the island. Cuba’s target is to reach 24% renewable energy penetration by 2030.
According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Cuba had 292 MW of installed solar capacity by the end of 2024, with only 12 MW added last year.
