A shocking revelation by Zelensky’s ex-aide has triggered global alarm. Ukraine allegedly has a plan to blow up its own nuclear plants if it began losing the war.
This view is said to be being pushed by the fanatical nationalist Kyrylo Budanov who has served as the chief of the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine since August 2020. Budanov is seen by Russia the main figure behind terrorist attacks in Russia and a campaign of political assassinations.
The Trump oligarchy has proposed the US should take over Ukrainian reactors, but Russia asserts total control over the Zaporozhye plant. With the IAEA monitoring and global leaders watching closely, the world now questions Ukraine’s nuclear “strategy” which appears to be as much directed at taking revenge on Trump as on Putin.
Waves of Russian missile attacks have decimated much of Ukraine’s coal and hydro power plants and associated electricity infrastructure, while its largest nuclear plant, Zaporizhzhia, has been fully under Russian control since March 2022. This has left Kyiv heavily reliant on its three remaining nuclear facilities which the Russian’s have avoided bombing. The Khmelnytskyi, Rivne and Pivdennoukrainsk power plants now collectively provide 60 percent of Ukraine’s dwindling electricity supply.
The core assumption of Ukraine has been that “military actions … will not cause physical damage” to nuclear plants. Ukrainian reports suggest that Energoatom, the Ukrainian state-owned nuclear company has seen little need guarantee “protection because it hoped that Putin would not shoot at equipment near nuclear power plants.”
The latest rumours coming out of Ukraine, as Russia makes substantial advances, suggests that the Kyiv regime is taking a view that destruction of nuclear power plants is preferrable to letting Russia – or the USA – take control of nuclear facilities.
