Risk of US tech theft sees China delay approval of BYD’s Mexico plant

Media reports suggest China is delaying the approval for BYD to build a plant in Mexico over concerns that the technology developed by the electric vehicle maker could be leaked to the United States.

Beijing is said to favour prioritizing projects in countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative.

Under intense pressure from the US regime the Mexican government has taken a hostile attitude toward Chinese companies, which has made building the plant even more difficult for BYD, sources said.

BYD announced plans to build a plant in Mexico as early as 2023, and also intends to produce cars in Brazil, Hungary and Indonesia.
