BYD invented a way of charging electric cars as quickly as refuelling a petrol vehicle, it was revealed last night. A five-minute charge will provide enough power to travel 400 km (249 miles), said founder Wang Chuanfu at an event livestreamed from the company’s HQ in Shenzhen.
The new charging device, called Super E Platform, will be made available all over China, he said, with plans afoot to build 4000 charging units.
The company also launched two new electric cars which will be able to maximize the capabilities of the new system: a sedan called Han L and an SUV called Tang L. The cars will cost 270,000 yuan, which is about $37,000 US dollars.
CLEAN ENERGY REVOLUTION
Wang has long had a dream of making electric cars as cheap and easy to use as gasoline vehicles—and solve the problem of “range anxiety” that stops people buying electric cars.
“In order to completely solve our user’s charging anxiety, we have been pursuing a goal to make the charging time of electric vehicles as short as the refuelling time of petrol vehicles,” Wang said.
At 1000kw, the BYD charger is twice the speed of Tesla’s fastest charger, which is 500kw.
Now there’s no reason not to join the clean energy revolution, he said.
