The chart below compares energy capacity of the world’s top ten countries in renewables generation. Three of the top 4 are BRICS member nations – China (world leader), Brazil and India – while the other is the USA.
China is setting the stage for another significant leap in renewable energy development in 2025, aiming to add over 200 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity with total power generation reaching about 10.6 trillion kilowatt-hours.
China is on track to establish a national unified power market, with non-fossil fuel power generation to account for around 60% of total installed capacity by the end of this year.
It is notable that:
- China produces nearly four times the renewable energy as the USA (the second top country);
- China (30.68%) exceeds the global average (30.24%) of renewable energy as a percentage of total electrcity capacity, while the US (22.67%) lags behind the global average. BRICS member Brazil leads the world with 88.86%.
