Industry news media Renewables Now reported that China’s BYD Energy Storage has signed contracts with the Saudi Electricity Company to deliver 12.5 GWh in five Battery Energy Storage System projects, marking the world’s largest grid-scale storage deployment to date.
A battery energy storage system (BESS) is a type of energy storage technology that uses a group of batteries in the grid to store electrical energy. Battery storage is the fastest responding dispatchable source of power on electric grids, and it is used to stabilise those grids, as battery storage can transition from standby to full power in under a second to deal with grid contingencies.
The new storage systems will integrate with the Saudi Arabia’s transmission network to manage renewable energy integration and peak demand.
According to PV Magazine, this latest contract is the third phase of SEC’s ongoing energy storage procurement. The battery stotage project supports Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 initiative, which targets 50% renewable energy in the national power mix by 2030.
The SEC company is 81.24 % owned by the Saudi Arabian government.
