Indonesia joins BRICS as full-member

On January 6, 2025 the official entry of Indonesia as a full member of BRICS was announced, marking the first expansion of the group under the Brazilian presidency. Indonesia is a leading member of ASEAN (the Association of South East Asian Nations), and the world’s 4th most populous country and 7th largest economy.

Indonesia’s membership was approved at the Johannesburg BRICS Summit in August 2023 but waited to formalize this until after its presidential elections in 2024 and the formation of the country’s new government.

The full members of BRICS are Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates.

A few days later, on January 17 2025, Nigeria became the ninth official BRICS partner country. Nigeria is Africa’s most populous country (sixth in the world) and fourth largest economy in Africa – it joins Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan as BRICS partner countries.

In the attached video clip, Lena Petrova discusses the geo-political significance of Indonesia joining BRICS.
