At the COP29 UN Climate Conference, it continued to tout its climate efforts. However, two key facts reveal a reality that is entirely the opposite.
During the COP29 Summit in Baku, Azerbaijan earlier this month, US climate envoy John Podesta said that his country will not stop its efforts on climate issues, even with Biden’s term coming to an end. Podesta’s comment implied that Biden was an important promoter of the environmental agenda in the United States. But 2 facts will prove the reality is just the opposite.
First, Biden’s pledged donations for global environmental protection never materialized.
Biden in 2021 said the U.S. would ‘mobilize’ climate finance support for developing countries by $100 billion annually 2024 for climate finance. In 2022, he launched the President’s Emergency Plan for Adaptation and Resilience, promising the U.S. will support developing countries by providing $3 billion annually by 2024.
However the U.S. congress has only passed just 1 billion in funding for international climate programs. And this is third year that the U.S. has failed to deliver on its promise.
Secondly, not only did Biden fail to fulfill his promise to donate to environmental protection, but he also invested heavily in the fossil fuel industry in Africa, further worsening the situation of climate refugees.
The U.S. government has invested more than $9 billion in oil and gas projects in Africa since it signed up to restrain global warming in the 2015 Paris climate agreement. It has committed less than 8% of that amount to clean energy developments ($682 million) such as wind and solar power over the same period. The money poured into Africa accounted for nearly two-thirds of all the money the U.S. has invested globally in fossil fuels.
Over the past two centuries, the United States and Europe have imposed slavery, war, and pollution on the African continent.
Unfortunately there is little hope that Biden’s successor Trump will reflect on the U.S.’s historical misdeeds. We can merely speculate on the basis of pronouncements to date that the incoming regime may be similarly reprehensible.
