With Trump back in the White House, the world will need China’s climate leadership more than ever. Donald Trump considers climate change a “Chinese” hoax, and has promised to withdraw the US from the Paris Agreement again (as he did in 2021).
Imperialism, war, hegemony, and the New Cold War are bipartisan policies in the US – whether fronted by Biden, Harris or Trump.
Trump proposes to wind down investment in renewable energy, to increase subsidies for fossil fuels, and to increase tariffs on electric vehicles and solar material from China.
He has promised to ramp up oil and gas production, to roll back environmental regulations, and to export more liquid natural gas to Europe.
In summary, a Trump presidency is a disaster for the planet.
China, on the other hand, has committed to peak carbon emissions by 2030 and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. Credible analysis indicates its emissions already peaked in 2023.
China is far and away the global leader in renewable energy, responsible for over 60 percent of all new renewable energy capacity installed world-wide last year.
China also leads the way in electric vehicles, high-speed rail, electric buses, biodiversity protection, reforestation and water conservation.
It is now clear that meaningful progress in the world relies on the unity of the Global South and the construction of a multipolar world.
